Brenner Earned Community Trust

**February 13th 2008 News Advertiser

I along with over 100 of my neighbours attended the Monday night Council meeting to support what our former Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner does best. Standing up and speaking out on behalf of communities who need a strong voice.  I with many of those who attended this meeting found Ms Littley’s suggestion that Mr. Brenner’s motive was self serving is an insult to him and to those of us who freely volunteer our time.  With all of his past experience as a Councillor  why wouldn’t any community want his help,   Our community approached him last June and he agreed to help us,  never once asking for anything in return.   Ms Littley, your campaign was about “a new perspective you can trust” perhaps that trust needs to start with you.  Mr. Brenner while no longer a Councillor worked over 21 years to earn and continues to have the trust of the people.  Rather than trying to discredit his motives, time would best be spent finding ways to work with him/ us and help to be part of our traffic calming solution.

Regional councillors should be in Brenner's corner

Re: Maurice Brenner

As a vice-president of Pickering and Ajax Citizens Together (PACT), I came to recognize Maurice Brenner as one of the most effective and dedicated councillors in the Ajax and Pickering area and on Regional Council.

I also wish to support the appointment of a Regional independent Integrity Commissioner as proposed by Durham Region's Commissioner of Human Resources.

On Nov. 19, the City of Pickering rejected Mr. Brenner's claim for legal expenses that resulted from their totally unjustified complaint initiated against him in 2003, and again in 2006 just before the municipal election.

Pickering staff investigated the complaints in 2003 and found them to be without merit. Yet, in 2006, acting on information from the mayor, a complaint was filed with Durham Regional Police that resulted in charges that were dismissed in 2007 following a trial. The conduct of the City of Pickering in how it dealt with the matter of his legal costs and the possible breach of Mr. Brenner's privacy is something that everybody should be concerned about. If ever there was a case that would support the Region assuming a lead role through an Integrity Commissioner this one is it.

The City is failing in the obligation imposed by the findings of innocence by a court by refusing to compensate Mr. Brenner and to help to restore his reputation.

Any citizen, in any community, could fall under the same type of suspicion and suffer the same unjustified damage to their reputation with the resulting cost, and humiliation, were they to stand for election. s

Since unjustified charges could be brought against any public official, all Durham Regional councillors should stand by their former colleague and press the City of Pickering to offer a just settlement to him.

Reader urges public apology to Maurice Brenner

*Ajax Pickering News Advertiser: December 5th 2007

Re: Nov. 25 editorial, 'Maurice Brenner Issue far from over'

Our family lives in Ward 2. We moved from Ward 1 and proudly supported Maurice Brenner for many elections. What happened to this former councillor is not only wrong but a manipulation of our democratic process.

If the lack of logic as to why a complaint needed to be filed after City staff investigated and were satisfied is not enough to wonder, the fact that it took over one full term of council, beginning before the 2003 election, when these documents found there way out of the City illegally, to end up before the Crown and police again just before the 2006 election becomes even clearer. Had this not happened Mr. Brenner would either still be a councillor or even the mayor.

So, while the courts found Mr. Brenner not guilty of breach of trust, there was a crime, not on the part of Maurice Brenner, but by a City insider who stood to gain while the rest of us, including Mr. Brenner, had something to lose.

We believe that justice was served and a public apology should be made to Maurice and his family.

City should pay Brenner's defense costs

Ajax Pickering News Advertiser

To the editor:

Re: 'Pickering won't pay Brenner's legal fees', Nov. 21 News Advertiser.

Council decided taxpayers should not pay for former councillor Maurice Brenner's legal fees citing that's what residents are saying.

I do not understand their logic or lack of conscience.

My family sent a letter to them supporting Mr. Brenner. It reads, "We have been following the charges levied against former Councillor Maurice Brenner. We have also noticed the full acquittal that was rendered. For someone who has sacrificed so much to serve the community with such passion, caring, and dedication, it sure seems as though he did not get a fair shake. It is usually very difficult to say politician, integrity, passion, honesty and dedication in one sentence, all of which Maurice Brenner has demonstrated.

As residents of Pickering, we think it's only fair that the City Of Pickering take up the cost of his legal defense."

I have spoken to many of our neighbours who feel as we do.

The Council vote does not reflect our views. Shame on you.

COUNCILLOR BRENNER IS A COURAGEOUS CHAMPION OF ENVIROMENTAL
AND SOCIAL ISSUES AND A LEADER IN SUSTAINABILITY
I have admired Maurice Brenner’s work from afar as a citizen of Ajax and Whitby for years as far back as the early 90s and find my values resonate with his. MAURICE HAS A TRACK RECORD, FIGHTING FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT

Maurice Brenner is a hard working Councillor who has shown leadership when it comes to initiating change. I met Maurice in 1985, when he was the only politician that supported “The Friends of the Altona Forest” He has continued to show leadership in the battle to protect “AMOS POND” and the “PINE GROVE FOREST”. He was also a leader in the battle that “Closed the Brock West Landfill Site” and the “STOPPED THE YORK DURHAM WATER LINE” Maurice introduced Sustainable Pickering in order to protect our scare resources for future generations. He is first to stand up and work with the community and ensures proper consultation.
Pickering and in particular Ward One will continue to benefit from Maurice Brenner’s dedication.

MAURICE BRENNER IS A COUNCILLOR WITH FIERCE DETERMINATION
TO PROTECT OUR HERITAGE

Our family the Barclays were the early settlers who fought for the freedoms that we all cherish today. Our home the Tullis Cottage was slated for demolition by Transport Canada and we were to be evicted. Maurice Brenner, a Ward One Councillor, came along at a time when our spirits were lagging in our fight for our home , with his knowledge and commitment to our cause we started to see a change for the better. His fierce determination in the face of considerable odds inspired us to keep on going. For this, we will be forever grateful.

Today thanks to his courage to take up the battle just as my ancestors did the Tullis Cottage has received a pardon.

Pickering needs Maurice Brenner to continue the fight to protect our heritage.

MAURICE RESPONDS WHEN THE COMMUNITY CALLS

Our Community has been fortunate to have Maurice Brenner as our Ward One Councillor. Over the last number of years my neighbours and I know that he has made a real difference. Because of his efforts to improve the safety and enjoyment of our community, we have had sidewalks installed on busy thoroughfares; he worked to get us an expanded bus service enabling many to choose public transit over driving. We have never had to 'fight' to be heard by Maurice, a simple phone call and he takes up the challenge on our behalf. I look forward to his next term in office and his continued support for my neighbourhood and all or Ward One

Sincerely,
Nicole Scarlet
Resident Ward One

MAURICE BRENNER FOUGHT AN AGGRESSIVE CAMPAIGN TO SAVE OUR
HOSPITAL AND ITS SERVICES

Maurice Brenner showed commitment and leadership when the threat of reduced hospital services needed an aggressive campaign.

Councillor Brenner showed his support not just with words but generated a campaign through petitions and e-mails that prompted thousands of responses in support of our doctors, nurses and our hospital. Today our expansion is a reality and a commitment to enhance not cut services has been made
Thank you Councillor Maurice Brenner

MAURICE BRENNER HAS EARNED THE RIGHT TO CARRY THE EAGLE FEATHER FOR
HIS COURAGE TO STAND AS A BROTHER WITH THE ABORIGIONAL COMMUNITY

Maurice Brenner is a brother to me and the aboriginal community. His courage to speak out to protect the heritage and burial sites of the First Nations People will have an impact for future generations and has earned him the right to carry the Eagle Feather. Councillor Brenner continues to demand inclusive discussions with all impacted First Nations People before any decisions are made for the development of Seaton.

His dedication has been recognized by my brothers across North America.

YOUTH IS A PRIORITY FOR MAURICE

Over 26 years ago, as a high school student, I asked Maurice Brenner to come to my high school and speak to our class about youth issues. He took the time to fulfill my request. Today, as not only a resident of Ward One but also in my professional capacities, I continue to witness Maurice's rigorous commitment youth. In three words, HE TRULY CARES. When issues such as violence and shootings impacted across the GTA, Councillor Brenner took a lead role to establish Communities Against Violence Everywhere. CAVE continues to champion its work by bringing together Professionals, Community Members, Police Services and the Business Community. 26 years later, Maurice still continues to provide leadership training to youth. I can say without hesitation, that youth is a priority for Maurice Brenner.

WHEN IT COMES TO CRIME PREVENTION, COUNCILLOR BRENNER
WORKS WITH THE COMMUNITY

When communities feel unsafe, Maurice Brenner listens, responds and gets involved. I contacted Maurice on behalf of our neighbourhood about the rise in criminal activity that was taking place. He immediately took action, met with us facts in hand. He listened and offered suggestions. Maurice is a “hands on Councillor” rolling up his sleeves and working side by side with the community we implemented “Neighbourhood Watch”. He was instrumental in co-ordinating a Community Meeting that facilitated and helped us conduct a Community Safety Audit. Through his involvement we were successful in implementing “Neighbourhood Watch” Today we have seen a 50% decrease in crime in our area community.

Thank you Councillor Maurice Brenner for helping to make our community a safer place to live.

Arlene Walker
Chairperson, Baylawn-Primrose Neighbourhood Watch

MAURICE PROMOTES LIVING AND WORKING IN OUR COMMUNITY

Having moved to Pickering several years ago, I met Maurice Brenner. At the time I operated my Chiropractic practice from Toronto. Councillor Brenner convinced me that living and working in my community made sense.
He helped me locate my practice in Ward One in the Oklahoma Plaza, which was the best decision I ever made.
Today my practice” Keyes to Health” has expanded to include a range of Health Services, none of this would have happened without Maurice’s assistance

COUNCILLOR BRENNER WORKS TO SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS

Maurice Benner works hard for small business. As a Councillor he responded to the needs of the Taxi Industry through the formation of the Taxi Cab Advisory Committee.
He understood the difficulties we faced on a daily basis both economically and for our safety. Councillor Brenner showed us respect by recognizing the Taxi Industry as “Front Line Ambassadors” for the City of Pickering
Thanks to the efforts of Maurice Brenner both the Taxi industry and its customers are better for it.

THANKS TO REGIONAL COUNCILLOR BRENNER “DEALING WITH BAYLY”

The Board of Directors wishes to express its sincerest gratitude to Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner. Councillor Brenner has been a great supporter of our corporation in recent years. Councillor Brenner has been directly involved in several of our “causes” including improvements to make our property entrances safer. Mr. Brenner has aided in addressing traffic and safety concerns on Bayly street, improvements to the landscaping along Bayly Street and most recently, was instrumental in ensuring that the leaking water main on Bayly street was repaired when all previous efforts had failed. Well done Councillor and thanks!!
