Passion For Community

Maurice BRENNER can be counted on to roll up his sleeves. As someone who cares about his Community, Maurice looks for creative ways to address the issues that matter most. When the Community asks for Maurice’s help, he says “YES.”

ADVOCACY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH

“Children are our future and their rights need to be protected”

In 1998, Maurice first introduced the importance of advocacy on behalf of children and youth in Durham Region.

He was appointed as Durham’s first Children and Youth Advocate. Through engaging the Community and a wide range of partners, Maurice expanded his advocacy across the GTA and has achieved several notable milestones:

Supported the rights of children with deadly allergies by providing reasonable accommodations to ensure an inclusive environment in their local schools
One of the first to raise the need for the Durham Regional By-law to regulate smoking in public places and workplaces, helping pave the way for such by-laws province-wide
Successfully lobbied for the continued funding for Durham’s Child Nutrition Project as part of the development and promotion of breakfast programs across Durham Region
Collaborated with the Community to write the Durham Region Children’s Charter
Increased community awareness of child poverty in Durham Region as a member of the Durham Regional Child Poverty Task Force
Invested over $1 million through the National Child Benefit Reinvestment Plan for Children of Durham as a former Councillor
Initiated and chaired Pickering’s Community Safety Day in 2005 and 2006

Contributed to the development of “True Sport,” an initiative that promotes positive sportsmanship

Maurice will build relationships between our Youth by establishing a Pickering Youth Council with access to the Mayor’s Office and input into decisions that are important to them

SUPPORTING AND PROMOTING PICKERING’S COMMUNITY GROUPS

Maurice BRENNER has a track record for supporting and collaborating with local community groups.  He encourages volunteerism – the backbone of what makes Pickering so special.

RECREATIONAL STRATEGY

Growth and change of current demographics impacts the Community. Pickering is already facing a lack of resources for all ages.

As Mayor, Maurice BRENNER will work to promote and build Community and private sector partnerships to support healthy recreational programs for all ages. Through collaboration with the Office of the Mayor and Members of Council, the Community will develop both short and long-term strategies through a Recreational Strategic Review.

STRONG COMMUNITY ADVOCACY = ACTION

In 1993, Maurice BRENNER advocated to close the Brock West landfill site. The site was closed in 1996.

In 2000-2003, Maurice aggressively fought along side the Community to stop the Durham York Region Water-line. He acquired local and regional support that stopped a project, which would have disrupted our Community.

Today Maurice continues to demonstrate his passion by fighting along side the community on those issues that impact our quality of life:

Stop the Stink
Direct Election of the Regional Chair
Mental Health Services
Ajax-Pickering Hospital Services

FIGHTING AGAINST COMMUNITY ENCROACHMENTS

Maurice BRENNER speaks out about community encroachments through inappropriate developments. As a former Councillor, Maurice successfully put in place community working groups who played a major role in resolving conflicts before the ink was dry on applications. These types of community partnerships must be restored.

PRESERVING HERITAGE IN NORTH PICKERING

Maurice BRENNER took up the cause to support Land Over Landings when Transport Canada’s destruction of North Pickering heritage sites led to evictions. Maurice assisted with legal matters as well as introduced various motions for designations of historical sites.

As Mayor of Pickering, Maurice will be the Community voice in the face of potential  destruction to our rural lifestyle.

COMMUNITY LINKAGES AND TRAILS

 Waterfront Trail

Pickering’s waterfront should be a destination point for local residents and tourists. While much of our trail system has been built, Maurice BRENNER is committed to its completion from Pickering’s Western Gateway to the Eastern border with Ajax.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

As a member of Durham Region’s Health and Social Services, Maurice BRENNER secured a commitment from Durham Region for a new Pickering Ambulance Station to improve critical response time.

COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

Maurice BRENNER takes a front seat when it comes to supporting the people who make Pickering Special

He was Honorary Chair for the Super Cities Walk for Multiple Sclerosis for over 4 years. When Cops for Cancer came to Pickering in 2006, Maurice was first to volunteer. Maurice has also Co-Chaired several major fundraising initiatives, including the Tsunami and Haitian Relief Effort
