Ward One Pickering Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner Responds To A Horrible Act Of State Terror
As an Elected Official, Durham Regions Child and Youth Advocate, a parent, and a Human Rights Advocate, I am shocked by the air attack that killed 61 School Girls and wounded a further 129.

These future lights of our next generation had already suffered family losses and had thought they found a safe haven at a home for children.

The United Nations through it’s Declaration has recognized the Rights of Children as a responsibility for all society. Yet in Sri Lanka these racist actions of genocidal proportions, is no more than an attempt for ethnic cleansing and a violation of the Human Rights of the ethnic Tamils.

When I read of how in the past 20 years over 80,000 lives have been lost, I draw a comparison to my own City of Pickering with a population of over 94,000. If this was to happen here I know there would swift action calling it like it is and demanding a stop to the needless killings.

I commit to not only to my friends in the Durham Tamil Association but to the Tamil Community as a whole, that I will continue to not only speak out but call upon every level of Government in Canada to make this a priority and demand an immediate call for peace in an effort that the Ethnic Tamils of Sri Lanka and their children, may someday enjoy the same opportunities that we are so fortunate to have in our Community.
