FOR DIRECT ELECTION OF THE DURHAM REGIONAL CHAIR
|
Maurice BRENNER is a “Candidate for Change.” During the 2006 municipal election, 89% of Pickering voters said “YES” to Direct Election of the Durham Regional Chair. On February 14, 2007, Pickering’s Mayor voted “NO” at the Durham Regional Council. Maurice listens to the Community and supports a process that encourages accountability, ensuring your voice is heard

PLANNING FOR REAL SUSTAINABILITY |
Maurice BRENNER brought the Community together in 2006, giving birth to a “Sustainable Pickering.” As an advocate for the Community, Maurice wants to engage Pickering residents in the planning for today and the future.
 |
Through your vote, you will help Maurice to build a Community:
| 1 |
Whose voice is heard and acted upon |
| 2 |
Where local business is our backbone |
| 3 |
Where we can afford to live |
| 4 |
That places an emphasis on development which will promote net benefit |
| 5 |
That protects the environment and all of its resources |

PLANNING FOR SEATON WITHOUT A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON OUR COMMUNITY |
By 2031, Pickering is expected to grow 146% to a population of 225,700, according to the Ontario “Places to Grow” strategy. Maurice BRENNER will work with the Community to ensure that further development:
|
| 1 |
Minimizes urban sprawl |
| 2 |
No longer has a negative impact on the fragile residential tax base |
| 3 |
Encourages real jobs for the long-term |
| 4 |
Ensures that an adequate East/West transportation network will address the existing gridlock in our Community |
| 5 |
Supports transit infrastructure on par with 905 west |
| 6 |
Reinforces economic, environmental and social sustainability |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
RESIDENTIAL GROWTH ALONE WILL BANKRUPT PICKERING TAXPAYERS |
The City of Pickering needs growth that promotes and supports existing business and employment opportunities. Residential taxpayers can no longer offset infrastructure and operating costs for development by footing the bill. Pickering’s residential tax base has already risen in excess of 80%. While the Mayor’s Office boasts frequent ribbon cuttings, many local businesses have faced closure, resulting in lost jobs and lease signs.
|
 |
| |
 |
Pickering needs a growth strategy that puts growth were it belongs. One that creates real jobs and decreases our residential tax base.
If elected, Maurice BRENNER will restore a Community and Business presence to the Office of the Mayor, with an emphasis on non-residential growth first. |

MAKING OUR COMMUNITIES SAFETY A PRIORITY |
While the Mayor’s Office reports that crime statistics declined in 2009, our Community remains concerned. Issues of vandalism, drug dealing and violent crime need to be addressed. Past initiatives such as Community Safety Audits and Communities Against Violence Everywhere (C.A.V.E) focused on making our Community a safe place to live. Without them, our safety is at risk.
As your Mayor, Maurice BRENNER will ensure that the Mayor’s Office takes a lead role in addressing crime and puts community safety back on the public agenda

RESTORING COMMUNITY HEALTH “A Fully Serviced Hospital” and Solving our Doctors Shortage |
When “Friends of the Ajax-Pickering Hospital” put out a call for help to save our hospital and services such as closure of the Birthing Wing, Maurice took up the fight through an aggressive awareness campaign and online petition. Again in 2007, Maurice fought to save Mental Health Services and hospital beds in our Community
Maurice BRENNER will work with the Community to ensure Ajax-Pickering Hospital is a “Full Service Hospital.”
While the expansion of our hospital moves forward, our Community continues to face a health care crisis. Many Pickering doctors no longer take new patients, making it harder for members of our Community to find a family physician.
Maurice BRENNER will give the issue of doctor shortage the attention it ought to have as a priority that needs to be addressed and solved. |

PROTECTING
OUR ENVIRONMENT |

2005
Honour Roll Award |
According to a Toronto Star report on March 4, 2010, Frenchman’s Bay has become “a stew of harsh contaminants with levels exceeding provincial watershed standards.” Under Maurice’s leadership, the Waterfront.
Coordinating Committee received the Toronto and Region Conservation for the Living City 2005 Honour Roll award for their work to revitalize Pickering’s waterfront. The committee’s work included a 5-year plan to facilitate recovery measures for Frenchman’s Bay and implement a Storm Water Management Plan completed by University of Toronto, Professor Nick Eyles in 2003.
Maurice BRENNER will ensure that the plan to
“Save the Bay” is implemented

PRESERVING
OUR HERITAGE |
| Federal Lands |
Eviction notices had been issued. The tractors were ready to tear down what was left of our heritage. Maurice didn’t hesitate to expose the intent to destroy Pickering’s historical sites, including Tullis Cottage. Nor did Maurice back down to Transport Canada regarding the Pickering Airport—instead insisting that they adhere to the Provincial Residential Tenancy Act requirements

Maurice BRENNER is prepared to put words into actions, and fight for procedural fairness on behalf of rural Pickering and our heritage. |
|
| Seaton and Provincial Lands |
Heritage Pickering identified the need to protect heritage sites in Central Pickering with the proposed Seaton Development. In response, Maurice brought forward a motion to put in place an Interim freeze, enabling the City to conduct a Heritage Study.
Maurice BRENNER wants to ensure that the future Seaton respects and incorporates our heritage. |

RESPONDS
IN CRISIS |
The Community can always count on Maurice when an emergency strikes. During the 2003 blackout and the Pickering flood of 2005, Maurice made himself available as Acting Mayor, Councilor and Citizen. Maurice was trained on the Emergency Response Plan for Pickering and never hesitated to initiate action.
Maurice BRENNER will be accessible and will respond in an emergency.

ENGAGING AND MOBILIZING THE COMMUNITY
|
Maurice recognized that immediate action was necessary when he co-chaired the Durham Region Tsunami Relief Effort after the 2004 Tsunami disaster.
Again in 2010, Maurice mobilized Pickering’s Community and businesses to respond to the Haiti Earthquake with the Haitian Relief Effort.

Maurice BRENNER is connected to our Community and knows how to mobilize
