PICKERING -- Hundreds of Pickering residents had fun and education at the Second Annual Community Safety Day held Saturday at the Pickering Recreation Complex.

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), Neighbourhood Watch and Pickering Fire Services were three of the many organizations offering presentations and displays at the event.

In honour of this year's focus, the DRPS tackled the issue of the physical and psychological effects of bullying.

Along with the presentations and displays, there were also many fun and interactive activities for children to participate in that would help them better appreciate the tips they were learning.

After speaking with some of the kids it appears that the sing-along, with Juno award nominee Mary Lambert, was one of the most exciting activities. The kids were able to join in the interactive performance and some even got to get up on stage.

The energetic performance covered a wide variety of safety skills ranging from fire safety to boat safety.

Maurice Brenner, Regional Councillor for the City of Pickering, helped organize the event and said the day provided a great chance for parents and children to meet the people that provide the services that keep our children safe.

Mr. Brenner believes that there is a common misconception in our society that it is only the responsibility of the government or the police to keep our children safe.

"In reality all of us have the shared responsibility to take care of our most valuable people and that's our young people."
